About
How can teachers provide the right support while helping students become confident, independent learners? This book study introduces a practical framework for intentionally shifting responsibility for learning from the teacher to the student. This book study explores the four interconnected phases of the Gradual Release of Responsibility framework: focused instruction, guided instruction, collaborative learning, and independent learning. Participants will examine how clear learning purposes, teacher modeling, purposeful questioning, responsive scaffolding, peer interaction, and meaningful independent practice can work together to deepen student understanding. Through reflection and classroom application, educators will consider how to use these phases flexibly rather than as a rigid sequence. Participants will leave with practical strategies for designing cohesive learning experiences, responding to student needs, increasing engagement, and developing students who can confidently apply their learning with greater independence.
